Manfred Nowak

Manfred Nowak (born June 26th, 1950 in Bad Aussee, Styria) is an Austrian lawyer and well-known human rights activist. For the United Nations, Nowak served as Special Rapporteur on Torture for the UN from 2004-2010. Nowak is still committed to human rights at the international level. He is a director at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights in Vienna, which he founded together with Hannes Tretter in 1992, and Professor of International Law and Humanitarian Law at the University of Vienna. He is also a former judge of the Human Rights Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Manfred Nowak is currently conducting an international study on children deprived of their liberty.
