Walter Thaler
Walter Thaler (born October 30, 1941 in St. Johann im Pongau) is a former Austrian politician of the SPÖ. Thaler studied English, German and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck. He worked as a high school teacher and school director, but also studied political science at the University of Salzburg, where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 2005. Thaler had in the course of time many political offices, primarily in Zell am See, where he also taught. He headed the Salzburg adult education center in Zell am See. Walter Thaler was a member of the Salzburg Parliament from 1982 to 2004 and its second president from 1993 to 1999. He has received numerous awards, including "Grand Decoration of the State of Salzburg", "Grand Decoration of Merit for the Republic of Austria" (2002), the "Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art First Class" and the "Decoration of Honor of the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers".
