Heinz Fischer
Heinz Fischer (born October 9, 1938 in Graz, Styria) is an important Austrian politician. From 2004 to 2016, the studied lawyer was President of the Republic of Austria. Prior to that, he was Minister of Science and Member of the National Assembly of the SPÖ as well as First and Second President of the Austrian National Council. Fischer's political career ranged from 1971 to 2004 as a member of the Austrian Parliament, with the exception of his time as Minister of Science 1983-1987. As Federal President, Heinz Fischer was extremely popular; in 2010 he was re-elected with more than 79% of the vote. Even before his time as President of the Confederation, Fischer took on numerous honorary posts. For example, he was president of the Friends of Nature and the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers for many years. Fischer was also founding and board member of the Austro-Chinese society. He has published the books "The Kreisky Years" (1993), "Reflections" (1998), "Wendezeiten" (2001) and "Beliefs" (2006) as well as - In autumn 2016 - the essay "A Speech". Heinz Fischer is the patron of Alpine Peace Crossing.
