Yoav Steinberg

Our father, Steinberg Jacov (Janco) was born on 1942 in Buhushi, Romania. He lived there with his father, Steinberg Saia (Saul), his mother, Dorina (Dvora), and his mother's mother, Roza. They all passed away, years ago Because of anti-Semitism they decided on 1945 to start the long odyssey to Israel. They moved illegally by foot, trains and trucks all the way to Hungary, where they got arrested and were taken to a jail in Budapest, Hungary. They stayed at the jail in very bad conditions for about six months. One day arrived group of people that organized all the prisoners and took them by train and after few hours they arrived to a kind of farm, where people gave them potatoes, bread and clothes. After a while in that farm, they start walk, led by a guide. They walked in the nights and find shelters during the day. Somewhere on the way, they moved by a train that took them to Wien, Salzburg and on November 1946, they arrived to "Givat-Avoda" D.P. Lager Camp in Salfelden, as my father is only 4.5 years old. After few days my father went to Kindergarten in Givat-avoda. After a while my grandfather became very sick, and was taken to the hospital in Saalfelden, where a military doctor gave him a treatment that saved his life. On September 13th, 1947, was born in Saalfelden, a brother to my father, his name was Israel. They stayed in Saalfelden until November 1947, and then they decided to move on with a group of people to Italy where they got promises that a ship will take them to Israel. They got on trucks to krimml and start to walk while on the way, they got help by the amazing Geisler family with food and clothes. After few days they arrive to Italy and stayed there for few months more, in a camp on Napoli and from there, to Israel. The end of the odyssey of our father with his brother and parents was when they arrived to Israel on August 30th 1948.
